Speaking Out

Rus Speaking at TBTN 2011-2

One of the most powerful ways you can help to challenge a culture of gender dis-respect is to say something.  We all experience times when we hear other men say something that we find disrespectful, gross, or appalling. Saying something in these situations helps to promote a more positive view of women and girls, and challenges the assumption that you approve of what he’s saying.

  1. Accept your role as a guy in helping end gender based violence. It affects everyone.
  2. Wear a white ribbon as your commitment against gender based violence.
  3. Be a role model and share with those around you the importance of gender respect.
  4. Speak your truth.  When you are offended or bothered by someone else’s comments, you have a right to speak your truth and say that you’re offended.  “Owning it” as you being offended also gives your position more validity.
